A former post office, circa 1930, with loads of character in Northcote Point, just 5 minutes from Downtown Auckland.
Keeping in sync with the era of the building, splashes of colour, come from a personal collection of 1930's Australian Depression Glass. There are homely touches of bowls of fresh produce, bookshelves laden with cookbooks and always a home-made tart on the kitchen counter. And an open kitchen to check out the action.
The Engine Room is a small neighbourhood bistro operated by Natalia, Carl and their small team. Their aim is to provide an informal and fun environment with a concise menu and wine list.
Concentrating on premium local produce, including home grown goods, the menu is made up of a combination of classic bistro dishes along with International and local favourites. Check out the Twice-baked Goat's Cheese Souffl, Steak Frittes, Thai Prawn Salad, Middle Eastern Rare Beef, Pomegranate and Date Salad, Churros con Chocolate, Pavlova with home-grown passion fruit, oh, and handmade Valrhona Chocolate Truffles!
Bookings are essential to avoid disappointment.

Utterly disappointed after hearing good things. The meals were expensive and over-rated. I could not even eat mine as it was drowned in fat. Left before dessert as the bill was already at $150 and I was starving!

I've been to The Engine Room about ten times now and am yet to be anywhere near even vaguely disappointed. My only problem with the place is that it has rendered the pork belly from pretty much anywhere else almost inedible.

Such a good place to eat and such amazing service. I was very very impressed at how helpful the staff were for my gluten free needs. Will be heading here again and again.

Have heard so many good comments about the restaurant that we were expecting very good things - and we were not disappointed. I had the souffle and the pork belly, and both were fantastic. Good setting, although a little loud when the place was filled. Great service, they even chucked in a free appetizer. We will definitely be back.

I had the best meal here with my sister and brother in law who were visiting from the States and we all thought our meals were fantastic. I had the snapper which just melted in my mouth and the cheese board after with a dessert wine to match was great as well. Definitely the best restaurant on the North Shore. No wonder it was in the top awards with Metro this year. I shall return

great food fresh and very tasty. I liked coming here for dinner. It was relaxed and not too formal priced well for the food.

This restaurant is worth the trip across the bridge. Although not really high end food, the ambience and service really help create a special dining experience. I had the goats cheese souffle for my entree and it was really nice. The donuts were a highlight for dessert. This restaurant strikes a really nice balance between the food, service and atmosphere. I will definitely go back there in the future. Yum!

Well worth the visit across the bridge . Quite an odd building with no view but fabulous food and very attentive service. Had the "special" of the day- sardines which were cultivated and sourced from Northland as our knowledgeable waiter informed us.

One of the best service, glass never went below 1/2 full and the staff was very attentive, did not even have to ask for the blinds to be put down due to setting sun and raised again once the sun disappeared. Waiter always served on the left hand side and clearing on the right hand side this is outstanding! they have taught their staff well! The setting was boutique and minimalistic but works well with the surrounding, would have been better with table cloths so it didn't feel like I was dining at a takeaway with white outdoor tables. Had their famous Steak Frets, the steak was grilled to my liking and the sauce lives to the name! However, the shoestring fries was lacklustre, a slightly chunkier cut would have been better and would give the impressing that it was hand cut and not bought frozen from the store. Ordered a lemon, lime and bitters heavy on the bitters, bar staff followed instructions to the dot and I was happy with my drink. Well recommended and will revisit shortly!
