Our vineyard is in an area known as The Wairau Bar, between the Wairau river and the sea, where the soil is rich and bountiful. Our role is not to interfere, it's to care. We let nature do what it does best.
Our goal is not to rule the land but to work with it. When you respect the land, everything flows through. te Pa is not registered as organic, but we follow many similar principles, such as taking care not to overwork the land, and letting the grass grow between rows of vines.
Seen from the air, te Pa is really an island, cut from the mainland by river and flood canal. We think of this as our own oasis, our very own Manhattan Island. The soil is rich, while fine alluvial gravels sit close beneath the surface. It's perfect for wine.
The bluffs take the edge of all winds but the rare Easterly. There are but a few frosts each winter. Often the weather is foul just a few score kms away, yet mild here. That's te Pa.
Many vineyards blend a range of grapes. Our Sauvignon Blanc (2007) and Pinot Noir (2011) are characterized by grapes coming from a single vineyard. You get to enjoy a richer, more full taste than with a blend. We think it's a more honest taste.
