The Mackenzie Basin really only became known in 1855 when James MacKenzie, a Scottish shepherd, was arrested for stealing sheep. Seeking a secret route for his flock he wandered inland and discovered the high country now bearing his name. The bronze statue of his sheepdog was erected in 1968 on the lake Shore and there is a memorial on the McKenzie Pass.
