12th May 2011 We were regulars at Fish Boys Petone, so finding one near our new house seemed great.
However this one is apparently working on not being a "fish boys" despite its name and advertising. They have cut half the "fish boys" menu (no more gourmet burgers) and replaced it with a piece of paper advertising kebabs.
4 crumbed fish and garlic chips is hard to screw up. But the fish were thin, dry, overcooked and tasteless, even before the masses of salt they pored into the box so the top one was glittering white. The chips were also encrusted with salt crystals and did not appear to be hot enough to melt the 2 humungous scoops of garlic butter... and little wonder, because when we tried to heat them up again under the grill at home it acted far more like mayonaise or cheese (butter melts into liquid gold, this melted into a slimy mess and started crisping along the surface the way cheese does). It tasted like strange cheese too, so I can only assume either they left the butter out and it has started to go rancid in the kitchen heat, or it wasn't butter.
Highly disappointing, I'm a chip fanatic and even I couldn't eat them for long. I'd heard it changed hands but it would appear the new owners don't want to be a "fish boys" after all.

Diners
29th January 2011 Three of us enjoyed fish dinners, one crumbed fillet, one battered and one grilled. All served with tasty salad and chips. We also enjoyed a delicious curry.
