I had the pleasure of staying at Bygone Era in early December and what a magnificent gracious home that is in the later stages of being lovingly restored. The owner is paying attention to every detail and the description of the house is spot on. Although restoration is not complete, our rooms were exquisite and the beds were to die for - best sleep in a very long time! Really like floating on a cloud. The hostess presented an absolutely divine breakfast and her hospitality was second to none. Once renovation is complete, I'd have no hestitation in rating this a 10. Top notch!
The philosophy of the Bygone Era Bed & Breakfast is about taking time out of your hectic lifestyle, whether you're on holiday or business - sitting back, relaxing and enjoying a slower pace of life within the confines and elegance of a bygone era.
You'll be hosted in a home that was built around the beginning of the 1900s and which still retains many of its original architectural features. These include a pillared carved archway in the entrance hall bordered by pressed tin and wood wall panels, magnificent carved wooden mantelpieces and tiled surrounds, ornate pressed tin ceilings and cornices and chandeliers. The house is undergoing ongoing restoration to preserve its Victorian architecture to ensure others who enjoy the opulence of that era can come, stay and relax in elegant but homely surroundings.
Situated 8 minutes from the city centre, Bygone Era is located in the North East Valley and is close to all Dunedin amenities and a perfect base from which to experience many of the wonders that Otago has to offer. Off-street parking is available to guests and if public transport is your means of transport, a bus stop is located right outside the gate.
The house also doubles as a small art gallery and features collections from NZ artists, most of which are for sale. Often the pieces create an interesting topic of discussion amongst guests and there's always something interesting and unusual on offer.
Facilities available to guests are the three guest rooms, formal lounge, dining room, master guest bathroom and an intimate TV Room.
Bygone Era is not particularly suited for young children, smoking is not permitted on the property and pets are not allowed.
Your hosts, Angela and Jasper (the cat), are committed to ensuring you have an enjoyable stay so if there is anything you need, please ask.
