16th April 2014 I have read all comments posted about the Royal Oak Tavern, Tapu Beach. Alarmingly 99 percent of the comments are very negative, to say the least. For the last few years, a group of good mates of mine travel from all over New Zealand as well as Australia to congregate here annually to "catch up" We take the time to talk with the locals, offer any assistance where required and also respect the people who live, work and play in this small coastal settlement. We are company owners, executive chefs, sales managers and telecommunications executives. We are unreserved when we say that we highly recommend this business, the staff, the quality of the service and food, as well as the quintessential atmosphere which is abundant at the Tapu pub. They went out of their way to keep the kitchen open for us when we arrived back from our fishing charter at 9.30pm. To have an executive chef ask for the recipe for a particular dish is a huge compliment. I implore all those contemplating on travelling this majestic coastal road, who would love to visit an historic building and step back in time, then stop at the Tapu pub. Make your own decision, leave all "pre meditated" expectations outside.
28th February 2016 I have worked in the catering sector as a chef for over 30 years in chartered clubs and aged care and I would never ever come out into the bar to make abusive and rude comments to any one. We went there last night and it was our first and last visit to this ??? establishement??? The pub side was fine but the RESTURANT is you can call it that was unfriendly and uninviting. the food was horrendous and the cook????? rude. A meal described as Coromandel chicken was nothing more than a deep fried chicken schnitzel thrown thru a wilted old lettuce salad. As for my husbands steak the dog enjoyed it!!.I certainly wouldnt be empolying this woman in any food establishement ive run!!! To whoever owns this establishment maybe you need to have a serious look at the restaurant and its staffing. Its a nice pub , in a great spot to attract the traveller, the fisherman and the tourists but I wont be recomending it to anyone who wants to eat and by the look at the reviews here I think you have a major problem or maybe you dont care coz the $$$ are still rolling in. All I can say is its a real pity

19th November 2013 My friends and I stayed at the camp ground across the road from the hotel for 3 nights,Camp was OK,basic but suited our purpose.
On last night there went across to the Hotel for a meal, that was fine.
While having our dinner some arguing between a old guy and some young punks ensued, they took their troubles outside.Publican did nothing, when asked to ring Police he did nothing, except saying that the people fighting would not be let back in the Hotel.
Well surprise surprise the young punks where all back inside after the ruckus, standing drinking at the bar talking to barstaf and publican.
When going back to the camp found that one of my mates had been king-hit from behind by one of these scumbags and his partner was pushed to the ground.
As it turned out my mate ended up with delayed concussion, and another mate of ours was also hit by these guys. All they were trying to do was to stop these young punks having a go at this old guy.
We were there for an annual fishing tournament but will never go back there again.

30th January 2013 In early Jan we stayed at the Tapu Creek Motor Camp (which incidentally is a fantastic, family orientated camping ground) and called into the Royal Oak for fish and chips. I was also abused by the cook (no one responded to the bell so I went to the kitchen.....bad move!). The service wasn't simply poor, it was hostile.

17th January 2013 What a joke this place and food is....
A group of us bikers stopped here recently and want to share a warning with you to keep on riding to Coromandel or Thames for food and drink that is worth having.
We were abused by the cook, that swore like a trouper and served us over-cooked greasy food that left us feeling yuck.......
The publican was heard moaning about us being an inconvenience and he was sick of us expecting his staff to be friendly. He was also heard saying he got stressed by the fishing and riding folk that expected him to put on food and happy atmosphere for them dropping by..... what a looser
He also runs the camping ground that seems to be equally unfriendly to bikers....
The loop ride looks longer without this stop-off but worth it when you are not treated like we were.
Good thing is the great ride round the coast road to Coromandel or Thames and the great warm welcome we received at these places.
WARNING keep on the bike until you have passed by the Royal Oak Hotel at Tapu....
